Multicultural Markets Team FAQ

1. Question: What happened to Scoutreach?

Answer: Scoutreach has been dissolved as a national division of the Boy Scouts of America. The Multicultural Markets Team will now encompass some of the core elements once supported by Scoutreach, along with expanding its service to more specific populations.

2. Question: What is the focus of the Multicultural Markets Team?

Answer: The Team is responsible for supporting local councils in building capacity to grow and sustain their membership in ethnically diverse segments of the population. This effort is part of the overall BSA strategy.

3. Question: Who is the point person at national to assist me?

Answer: De Tan Nguyen is team leader for the Multicultural Markets Team. Working with De Tan is Lee Shaw, a Multicultural Markets membership specialist. Either De or Lee can answer questions, provide materials, facilitate training, or develop resources.

4. Question: How can I continue to support my Scoutreach program?

Answer: If you have a Scoutreach program that is viable and meets the needs of your council, you will continue to be served by the Multicultural Markets Team. The objective is to provide additional support, not less, regardless of which program name local councils currently use to identify ethnic populations and underserved communities in their geographic area.

5. Question: Is the National Council still focusing on urban and rural areas?

Answer: Absolutely. Diversity and inclusion are critical to the growth and relevancy of the BSA. The organization is currently investing a great deal of time and resources to determine the best strategies, as well as methods to implement those strategies in local councils to provide Scouting opportunities to emerging populations and underserved communities.

6. Question: Is there a difference between the Hispanic Initiatives Team and the Multicultural Markets Team?

Answer: Yes. The Hispanic Initiatives Team has a specialized focus and may be better able to support specific councils based on geographical and other circumstances. A determination will be made regarding which group is best suited to support you after your request has been received.
